Meet Rowley! Another MazdasNW Legend

Hello there! My name is Rowley, but I am better known online as Uze. I live in Port Orchard, with my wife Patty, and my 20 year old son Robby. I drive a Metropolitan Gray Mica MazdaSpeed 3 GT, equipped with a Cobb SRI neatly housed in a custom built CAB (cold air box), a Forge BPV, RPMC Turbo Inlet, Prosport Boost Gauge, CP-E rear MM, and RKM Shifter Bushings.

I became involved in MazdasNW about a year ago. I started out over at M3F and found myself hanging out in the Northwest board the majority of the time, because there were people there who not only loved their Mazdas, but didn’t seem to thrive on attempting to belittle others in a vain attempt to make themselves seem neat/cool/smart. I made it to a meet or two, then I got a chance to go to an install day, and a couple drives, and I was totally hooked. Eating, talking, and taking pics was “aight”, but driving together, and working together on Mazdas was what really bonded me to this fantastic group of people, and helped me to replace my WoW addiction with an addiction to my car. I’ve even joined the guys on the drag strip, and have gone auto crossing several times.

Through the years I have had a lot of cars, and they all lead me here, in a rather unusual way. My first car was a ’74 Fiat X-19, lime green, yet extremely sharp looking (pun intended). That car cost me $300 every time I drove it, and after driving it 10 times, I seized the aluminum head to the aluminum block, and my $2,500 initial investment, plus all the monies I had spent in repairs (~3000), was toast. My next car was a ’64 Mercedes 220, which was fun and unique, but didn’t end up being the right fit. Shortly thereafter, while driving past a home based muffler shop in my area (Hugo, Oregon), I spotted a ’69 Camero Z-28 in extremely nice shape, with $2,400 written in soap on the windshield, and I fell immediately (and madly) in love. I came to find out, that the original 302 long block was long gone, but replaced with an exceptionally well built 327. I got a speed racing ticket the very first day I got the car, and ended up with a couple more before I decided to let my much luckier friend do most of the street racing from that point forward. I drove it for years, and took it with me when I moved to San Jose, for which, it never truly forgave me, but how could I blame it? Drowning in carbon build up, it attempted to put itself out of its misery by allowing my girlfriend to drive it into the rear end of some hideous 80’s car.

Thus began the dark era of automobiles in my life… a 1988 Nissan 4×4 (my first new car), followed by perhaps one of the worst automobiles in existence, a Ford LTD, which fortunately my girlfriend put out of it’s misery by driving it around with the oil light on. After that, I tried to break the pattern of self mutilation with a 1975 BMW 320i bought at auction here in Washington. Sadly, I later learned that extremely stoned chicks driving without insurance in huge land yachts are unable to see vintage faded green BMWs, driving along at 50 MPH in the Southern Oregon sunset. Since I felt like I had still not paid proper penance for my rebellious and Camero filled youth, I plopped down the settlement I got from having uninsured motorist protection, on an newer used Ford LTD, which ended up being replaced by a brand new Honda Odyssey (trust me, it was a huge step up) before I felt I was ready again for a car that wouldn’t get me laughed at for driving (little did I know).

Before the internet bubble burst, while my friends and co-workers were buying Lamborghinis, Ferraris and Porsches, I bought a red S2000, in 2000, and drove everywhere, like a maniac. I was, yet again, in love. But it wasn’t meant to be, in part because I always felt like I always had something to prove. Cars would pull up next to me, and I felt it important to show each one that this was no ordinary Honda. My boss, a Spanish, soccer loving, Boxter owning (non-S version, in a time when the S2K was kicking (non-S) Porsche Boxter ass) would, almost daily, ask me how “I liked my Miata”. I have nothing whatsoever against the Miata, but managed to let it get to me every time, since I had almost twice the HP in roughly the same sized package.

I hit a rough patch in my life, and had to get rid of the S2000. A couple years later, I started to see the MS3 popping up… a 263HP, 280TQ 5 door wagon that topped out at 155 MPH, and went from 70-0 in less than 160 feet, and still got great mileage? I had always known of Mazda’s race history, but the fact that they took something so practical, and made it perform like a “sports car”, all for ~$25K, it blew my mind. It never ceases to amaze me that I can scare my wife and 2 other victims while driving to Costco, then fit a completely stuffed to overflowing Costco sized cart into the “way way back” without having to see any of it from the cockpit, then still have to watch myself to make sure I don’t get a speeding ticket driving back on the way home. Try that it in a “sports” car!

I am both glad and proud to be part of MazdasNW, and I look forward to modding, driving, racing, oogling, and gabbing with you all for years to come.
